Jean Trocard Violin Case Study

Problem

When the table was removed for inspection, a crude bell patch repair and sound post repair were revealed. There had been extensive wood-worm damage necessitating the bell patch. The original bell patch also strengthened the sound post crack repair. There was also a distinct arching distortion and wing cracks.

Solution

We decided to re-do these repairs starting by correcting the arching distortion. Wing crack repairs were also incorporated. We then re-glued the sound post crack, replaced the bell patch and fitted a new bass bar.

As the table-edge was extremely thin and damaged in several places, half-edging was required. New wood was used in areas at excessive wear and where original wood was missing entirely.
